We love seeing companies get creative with what they can offer by including some noteworthy non-monetary benefits. In addition to salaries and bonuses, we’re seeing packages include things like flexible hours, work-from-home days, professional development programs, wardrobe allowances and birthdays off. We also come across more unique benefits like parking spots, extra annual leave, pet-friendly offices, yoga studio subscriptions and volunteer days. As well as speaking volumes about the culture of a company, these perks often play a big part in helping employees achieve a good work-life balance.

A recent article from the team at SEEK highlights just how much New Zealanders value work-life balance. They explain that “work-life balance encompasses a range of factors - things like flexible working hours, additional leave, or being able to work remotely. And what’s clear is that work-life balance means different things in different industries, depending on industry conditions and specific job requirements.” They clarify that “work-life balance and salary are both key considerations for all workers and job seekers, when they’re searching for and comparing jobs. But what work-life balance breaks down to is different for different people.”

The article identifies the three most highly sought after non-monetary incentives in the retail industry to be:

  1. Time in lieu

  2. Additional leave

  3. Ability to work remotely

So why, as an employer, is it worth your while to consider work-life balance when cultivating company culture and putting together your packages? “Making sure that what your company offers job seekers will meet their needs can mean you get better quality candidates and are more likely to retain good staff.” The added bonus is that these extra elements might make your offer stand out, without your wage budget having to take a hit. 

When negotiating a package, whether as an employee or employer, it’s worth considering ways you can supplement the salary with non-monetary benefits that might help achieve work-life balance.
